WHAT TO PACK
TREKKING KIT LIST

GET READY FOR YOUR TREKKING TOUR

Hiking gear and comfortable clothing are essential for every trekking tour. The experts at Mont Blanc Treks, Chamonix have compiled a list of hiking gear and other important items you will need to carry on the tour. For all one-day and multi-day treks, you will need a range of good quality equipment and clothing to ensure you have an enjoyable tour. A day rucksack will be required when you opt for a baggage transfer (approximately 20 litres) and a larger rucksack for Mont Blanc Treks and Haute Route multi-day treks without bag transfer (approximately 28- 35 litres). If you wish to bring an additional hold-all to put travel clothes and other items not required on the trek, there will be an opportunity to leave this at our starting point and will be returned to you at the end of the trek. Bag transfers are available on request. Get in touch with us for more information.

Treks with bag transfer needn’t carry a change of clothes apart from the nights you are in mountain huts. For treks without a bag transfer, we recommend you travel as light as possible without leaving out any of the essentials listed below.

TREKKING KIT LIST

RUCKSACKS
Day sack: A small sack will be required when opting for a baggage transfer. Approximately 20 litres in size, the bag must be large enough to carry warm and waterproof layers, essential kit, food and drinks. You will need a rucksack liner to keep the contents dry and waterproof.

Multi-day sack: A lightweight sack of 28 - 35 litres is needed when not opting for baggage transfer. We suggest bags without lots of pockets as they tend to make the sack heavier. You will need a rucksack liner to keep the contents dry.
BASE LAYERS
Short sleeve: Lightweight, breathable base layer made out of a synthetic fabric that can be washed and dried quickly. 2 will be enough as you wear one and wash one.
Number required - 2

Long sleeve: Base layer for use as an extra layer if needed over a t-shirt. It is also useful to wear in the evenings. Make sure it’s lightweight and breathable and is made of a material that will wash and dry quickly.
MID LAYER
Fleece mid layer to give you a bit of warmth on cooler days or on a descent. Again, make sure it’s lightweight and packs down small. One will be enough.
TREKKING TROUSERS AND SHORTS
Trousers: Lightweight walking trousers to wear if it is cold, or during the evenings. One pair is enough.
Shorts: Lightweight shorts, one pair is normally enough.
UNDERWEAR
Lightweight and breathable underwear that can be washed and dried quickly. 2 pairs will be enough; wear one, wash one!
LIGHT-WEIGHT DUVET JACKET
As guides, we always take a very light weight duvet jacket. This is our ultra-warm layer and weighs no more than a fleece jumper and probably packs down smaller!
WATERPROOF JACKET
Lightweight waterproof over-trousers that is pack-down small. These can be worn over shorts to give extra warmth on a windy col or to keep you dry on wet days.
HATS AND GLOVES
Sun hat as the sun can be fairly intense at high altitude. Warm hat and gloves are essential if we experience cold weather. Hopefully, the hats and gloves will stay at the bottom of the rucksack.
WALKING BOOTS
Good sturdy walking boots that offer support to the ankle. They don’t have to be leather as these days you can buy fairly light-weight waterproof shoes which are just as good. Make sure new boots are worn in beforehand.
