Self Guided Trek: Walker's Haute Route - Best of in Refuges
Duration: 9 nights
Trekking: 8 days
Suitability and grading: Grade 4 - high level of stamina and fitness required for 11 days of trekking over the Alpine terrain
Accommodation: 3 x hotel, 4 x auberge/ hostel and 2 x mountain refuges
Meals: 1 night B&B in Chamonix, 1 night room only in Zermatt, 7 nights half board (B&B + 3 course evening meal) whilst on the trek

9 NIGHT ITINERARY

DAY 1

Arrival in Chamonix. Hostel accommodation.

DAY 2

CHAMONIX TO TRIENT
 You start by taking a short bus ride to Montroc where you make your ascent to the Col du Balme via the beautiful Aiguillette des Possettes. Crossing the border into Switzerland and descend to the Swiss village of Trient. Auberge accommodation in dormitory.

Height gain: +1100m
Descent: -1000m 

DAY 3

TRIENT TO CHAMPEX-LAC VIA FENETRE D'ARPETTE
Leaving Trient you climb steeply to the Fenetre d’Arpette. A tricky descent over boulders leads you to pastureland and to the picture postcard village of Champex-Lac. Hostel Accommodation. Optio to take the variant via Bovine.

Height gain: +1400m
Descent: -1200m  

DAY 4

CHAMPEX-LAC TO CABANE DU MONT FORT
You will start the day by an easy descent into to the Orsiére Valley and trough the Swiss villages of Sembrancher and Châble. From Châble you take the cable car to Les Ruinettes within the Verbier ski area and a short trek will take you to our destination. Refuge Accommodation.

Height gain: +350m
Descent: -700m 

DAY 5

CABANE DU MONT FORT TO CABANE DE PRAFLEURI
Making your way on a lofty traverse to via the Sentier des Chamois to the Col du Termin. From here you continue to the rocky Col de Louvie you traverse below the Grand Desert Glacier you pass a series of small tarns before ascending once more to the Col de Prafleuri and descending steeply to the Cabane de Prafleuri. Refuge Accommodation.

Height gain: +900m 
Descent: -500m 

DAY 6

CABANE DE PRAFLEURI TO AROLLA
Passing over the Col des Roux you descend to the Lac Dix and contour above the shoreline for several kilometers before rising again to the Col de Riedmatten. Descending from the col you finally reach the small alpine village of Arolla. One arrival in Arolla you take the Swiss Poste bus a short distance to La Sage. Hotel Accommodation in dormitory.

Height gain: +850m
Descent: -1400m 

DAY 7

LA SAGE TO ZINAL
We climb steadily to the Col du Torrent before descending via Lac Autannes to Lac de Moiry & the barrage. From here we have two options, ascend again towards Col de Sorebois & descend steeply through the ski area where you take the cable car to Zinal, or take the bus from the barrage to Zinal to shorten the route and reduce the height gain & descent (dependent on weather, fatigue & time). Auberge accommodation in dormitory.

DAY 8

ZINAL TO GRUBEN
A steady climb through woodland to the high mountain pastureland passing the remote Barnueza Alpage. Once at the Col du Forcletta you then make your descent in to the Gruben valley & small village of Gruben. Auberge accommodation in dormitory.

Height gain: +1200m
Descent: -1000m 

DAY 9

GRUBEN TO ST NIKLAUS AND TRAIN TO ZERMATT
Another steep climb leaving Gruben to high-level pastures to the Augustbordpass. Descending steadily towards Jungen you take the little cable car to St Niklaus and then take the mountain train to Zermatt with stunning views along the route. Hotel Accommodation in dormitory.

Height gain: +1100m
Descent: -1000m 

DAY 10

DEPARTURE
You have the option of adding a extra days at the start of the trek in Chamonix or after the tour in Zermatt.
