Self Guided Trek: Walker's Haute Route - full In Refuges
Duration: 13 nights
Trekking: 12 days
Suitability and grading: Grade 4 - high level of stamina and fitness required for 11 days of trekking over the Alpine terrain
Accommodation: 3 x hotels, 6 x auberges/ hostels and 4 x mountain refuges
Meals: 1 night B&B in Chamonix, 1 x night room only in Zermatt, 11 nights half board (B&B + 3 course evening meal) whilst on the trek

13 NIGHT ITINERARY

DAY 1

Arrival in Chamonix. 

DAY 2

CHAMONIX TO TRIENT
You commence your trek by taking a short bus ride to Montroc for the start of your trek. From here you ascend to the Col du Balme via the beautiful Aiguillette des Possettes. Crossing the boarder into Switzerland and descend to the Swiss village of Trient. Auberge accommodation in dormitory.

Height gain: +1100m

DAY 3

TRIENT TO CHAMPEX-LAC VIA FENETRE D'ARPETTE
Leaving Trient you climb steeply to the Fenetre d’Arpette. A tricky descent over boulders leads you to pastureland and to the picture postcard village of Champex-Lac. Auberge accommodation in dormitory. option to take the variant via Bobine.

Height gain: +1400m
Descent: -1200m  

DAY 4

CHAMPEX-LAC TO CABANE DU MONT FORT
You will start the day by an easy descent into to the Orsiére Valley and trough the Swiss villages of Sembrancher and Châble. From Châble you take the cable car to Les Ruinettes within the Verbier ski area and a short trek will take you to our destination. Refuge accommodation.

Height gain: +350m
Descent: -700m 

DAY 5

CABANE DU MONT FORT TO CABANE DE PRAFLEURI
Making your way on a lofty traverse to via the Sentier des Chamois to the Col du Termin. From here you continue to the rocky Col de Louvie you traverse below the Grand Desert Glacier you pass a series of small tarns before ascending once more to the Col de Prafleuri and descending steeply to the Cabane de Prafleuri. Refuge accommodation. Option to take the variant via the Col de la Chaux which is a more technical route but shorter distance.

DAY 6

CABANE DE PRAFLEURI TO AROLLA
Passing over the Col des Roux you descend to the Lac Dix and contour above the shoreline for several kilometers before rising again to the Col de Riedmatten. Descending from the col you finally reach the small alpine village of Arolla. Hotel accommodation in dormitory.

Height gain: +850m
Descent: -1400m 

DAY 7

AROLLA TO LA SAGE
A easy day as we make our way via Lac Bleu to the typical Valaisian Village of Les Hauderes & on to the hamlet of La Sage in the Val d'Herens. Arriving mid afternoon with time to rest and relax.

Height gain: +215m
Descent: -700m

DAY 8

LA SAGE TO CABANE DE MOIRY
Leaving La Sage you climb steeply to the Col du Tsate and descend to Lac de Moiry. Following the shoreline of the lake for a while before a further climb towards Cabane de Moiry situated in the truly stunning location next to the Moiry glacier.

Height gain: +1650m
Descent: -500m 

DAY 9

CABANE DE MOIRY TO ZINAL
Taking the same path from the cabane that you ascended on the day before before traversing high bringing you to the far end of Lac Moiry and joining the path to the Col de Sorbois. Once over the col a descent through the Zinal ski area brings you to the cable car de Sorbois and beyond on a steep track through the trees to Zinal. Option to take the cable car to Zinal to shorten the day & descent if needed.

Descent: -1550m 

DAY 10

ZINAL TO GRUBEN
A steady climb through woodland to the high mountain pastureland passing the remote Barnueza Alpage. Once at the Col du Forcletta you then make your descend in to the Gruben valley & small village of Gruben.
Distance: 14km
Height gain: +1200m
Descent: -1000m 

DAY 11

GRUBEN TO ST NIKLAUS AND GRACHEN 
Another steep climb from Gruben to high-level pastures of the Augustbordpass. We make your descent steadily from the col towards Jungen where we take the little cable car to St Niklaus and a short buss ride across the valley to Grachen. Hotel accommodation.

Descent: -1000m 

DAY 12

GRACHEN TO EUROPAHUTTE
Departing Grachen you traverse along the Wanderweg to Gasenreid before gaining height steeply to Mittelberg and the St Bernard statue, which offers great views of the Bernese Alps and magnificent Grosser Aletschgletscher. The path continues over difficult terrain at times before reaching the Europahutte. Dormitory accommodation.

DAY 13

EUROPAHUTTE TO ZERMATT
For the past few years the second half of the Europaweg between the Europahutt and Taschalp has been closed due to stone fall (hence descending to Randa). There has been more recent stone fall on the section past Taschalp therefore from the Europahutte you will descend to Randa and climb again to rejoin the Europaweg to Taschalp and then descend joining lower route into Zermatt. DAY 14

DEPARTURE
You have the option of adding a extra days at the start of the trek in Chamonix or after the tour in Zermatt.
