We run our O Circuit trek during the southern hemisphere's autumn, when the trails are quieter and the vibrant autumn colours create a truly stunning backdrop. However, Patagonian weather is famously unpredictable. You should be prepared for everything, sunshine, strong winds, rain, and possibly snow, often all in one day.
Clothing and Equipment Essentials
Waterproof and breathable outer layers are critical. A high-quality Gore-Tex (or equivalent) waterproof jacket and trousers should be packed and carried at all times, weather conditions can change quickly and without warning. They will also provide protection against the Patagonian wind.
Warm clothing is also vital, especially for the colder nights while camping. Be sure to pack insulating layers, gloves, and a warm hat. A moisture-wicking thermal base layer is highly recommended for comfort and warmth in colder conditions.
Footwear is one of the most important pieces of gear for this adventure. Trekking boots with strong ankle support, excellent grip, and maximum waterproofing are essential. The terrain on the Patagonia Guided Trek is highly varied, expect rocky paths, steep ascents, and potentially muddy or loose ground. Depending on the time of year, you may also encounter snow or heavy rain.
Accommodation on the trek will be a mix of hotels, refuges, cabins, and tents, so versatility and comfort in your gear are key. A layered clothing system is the most effective way to regulate your body temperature as you gain or lose altitude throughout the trek.
Additional Gear Tips
Trekking poles are strongly recommended. They provide extra stability on ascents, help reduce strain on your knees during long descents, and are invaluable on uneven or slippery terrain.
All your gear should be suitable for multi-day trekking in remote, unpredictable mountain environments. On the O Circuit, it’s entirely possible to experience warm sunny days, driving wind, heavy rain, and snowfall, sometimes all in one day. Preparation is essential.
