A classic high-level trek through the heart of the Aosta Valley, the Alta Via 1 is a spectacular route linking quiet mountain valleys, historic villages and dramatic high cols, all under the gaze of some of the Alps’ most impressive giants. From Monte Rosa and the Breithorn to the unmistakable Matterhorn, the rugged Grand Combin, and onward toward Mont Blanc, this is a journey packed with big scenery, wild terrain, and wonderfully welcoming Italian hospitality.
This trek is designed for experienced hikers, comfortable with long mountain days, sustained ascents and steep descents. In terms of difficulty, it is comparable to the Traverse of the Gran Paradiso (Alta Via 2) on the opposite side of the valley.

Your trek begins in Gressoney-Saint-Jean, a charming mountain village set beneath the dramatic skyline of the Monte Rosa massif. With its Walser heritage and relaxed Alpine atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to settle in and prepare for your first day on the trail.
Optional additional night here is recommended if you would like more time to explore the area before starting the trek.
