Trail Update European Alps

Trail Conditions Update – Late July 2026

As we head into August, trekking conditions across all of our Alpine routes are excellent. All trails are now snow-free, and the season is in full swing, with fantastic walking conditions from the Tour du Mont Blanc to the Walkers Haute Route, Tour of Monte Rosa, Traverse of the Gran Paradiso, Alta Via 1 (Dolomites) and Alta Via 1 (Aosta Valley).

The prolonged spell of hot, dry weather has made for superb trekking, but it also brings a few additional considerations. Some of the smaller natural water sources and springs along the trails may now be running low or have dried up completely. We recommend carrying sufficient water between refill points and planning ahead, particularly on longer or more exposed stages.

The dry conditions have also increased the risk of rockfall, especially on steep, rocky terrain. Always remain alert, look uphill as you traverse beneath cliffs or gullies, and avoid lingering in areas where rocks could be dislodged naturally or by walkers above.

Mountain weather can change rapidly, even during settled periods. Check the local forecast each day before setting out. If afternoon thunderstorms are predicted, start your day early so that you have crossed the higher passes and are well into your descent before storms develop. High mountain ridges, summits and exposed cols are no place to be during electrical storms.

Finally, should heavy rain occur, take extra care both during and immediately afterwards. Saturated ground can lead to landslides, debris flows and unstable sections of trail, particularly in steep gullies and areas that have experienced prolonged dry weather beforehand.

Our guides continue to monitor conditions on all of our routes throughout the season, providing real-time updates from the mountains. We'll publish any significant changes here as they occur.

Have a fantastic trek, stay aware of the conditions, and enjoy the mountains safely.
