What to Eat

On the Salkantay & Inca Trail Guided Trek

Food on the Trail

We’re often asked about the food available while trekking in the Peruvian Andes, and for good reason. Nutrition is a key part of any trekking adventure, and enjoying a hearty meal after a long day in the mountains is one of the true highlights of the experience.

You’ll be burning a significant number of calories each day, so fuelling your body properly is essential, not only for energy and endurance but also for your recovery and overall enjoyment. Meals on the Salkantay & Inca Trail trek are simple, satisfying, and designed to keep you going through long days on the trail.

On the trek we will be accompanied by a local guide, chef & horsemen and their horses. The team will provide safe drinkable water however, we strongly recommend bringing a personal water filtration system. Avoid buying bottled water whenever possible, all waste must be carried out of this environmentally sensitive area.

Hydration & Nutrition Tips

Hydration and proper nutrition are just as important as your physical fitness on the trail. Poor fuelling can lead to fatigue, dehydration, or altitude-related issues. Start each day well-hydrated, and carry at least 1 litre of water with you. The support team will have bottled water so you can top up on the go.

If you're not used to eating on the move, we recommend testing different snacks and hydration routines during your training hikes to find what works best for you.

Drinks

Drinks will be provided with evening meals.
