What to Eat

On the Tour of the Jotunheimen Guided Trek

Food on the Trail

We’re often asked about the food available while trekking in Norway, and for good reason. Nutrition is a key part of any trekking adventure, and enjoying a hearty meal after a long day in the mountains is one of the true highlights of the experience.

You’ll be burning a significant number of calories each day, so fuelling your body properly is essential, not only for energy and endurance but also for your recovery and overall enjoyment. Meals on the Tour of the Jotunheimen trek are delicious, satisfying, and designed to keep you going through long days on the trail.

The guided trek will run very much as our alpine treks, you will have one UIMLA guided who will accompany you on the tour. The guide will give you all the information needed so you know what to expect in terms of food and drink. You will have a hearty 3 course meal in the evening with delicious locally prepared produce. The buffet breakfast will be substantial and you will be able to make a pack lunch from the produce offered at breakfast time. Water is drinkable at all the accommodations, there wont be many opportunities to fill up on-route so you might consider bringing a personal water filtration system. Avoid buying bottled water whenever possible, all waste must be carried out of this environmentally sensitive area.

Hydration & Nutrition Tips

Hydration and proper nutrition are just as important as your physical fitness on the trail. Poor fuelling can lead to fatigue, dehydration, or altitude-related issues. Start each day well-hydrated, and carry at least 1.5 litres of water with you. You can also bring a flask in addition, the accommodation will fill this up for you with tea, coffee or hot juice.

If you're not used to eating on the move, we recommend testing different snacks and hydration routines during your training hikes to find what works best for you.

Drinks

Water will be provided at mealtimes. Drinks with evening meals are not included, these can be purchased directly from the accommodation.
