Footwear should be supportive with excellent grip, as the terrain on the Annapurna Guided Trek is highly varied, expect rocky trails, steep ascents, uneven stone steps, and potentially muddy or loose ground. It’s not unusual to encounter snow or heavy rain depending on what time of year you trek. We organise our Annapurna trek in autumn because the weather tends to be more stable, sunny days and clear cold nights, however, anyone that has experience of mountain hiking will know very well how conditions can change rapidly.
Therefore; waterproof and breathable outer layers are essential. A Gore-Tex (or equivalent) jacket and trousers should be packed and carried at all times, weather conditions can change rapidly in the Himalayas. Warm clothing is also crucial. Pack insulating layers, gloves, and a warm hat, as at higher altitudes it will be much colder. A moisture-wicking thermal base layer is highly recommended for comfort and to keep you warm on cold nights. We will be staying in guest–house accommodation and although they will offer a very warm welcome, they are not heated, a winter down jacket is highly recommended. Trekking boots are recommended for ankle support and durability, though some high-quality lightweight trekking shoes can be suitable for some days.
A layered clothing system is the most effective way to regulate your body temperature as you gain or lose altitude.
Trekking poles are also essential, they help with stability on ascents and descents, especially on uneven Himalayan paths.
All gear should be suitable for trekking at high altitudes and in unpredictable mountain conditions. On the Annapurna trails, it’s possible to experience warm sunny days, monsoon rain, and even snow at higher altitudes. Preparation is key.
