For many years, Mont Blanc Treks has been guiding walkers through some of the world's finest mountain ranges. From the High Atlas of Morocco to the Andes of Peru, the Himalayas of Nepal, the wilderness of Patagonia and the spectacular landscapes of Norway, our Worldwide Treks have become a collection of unforgettable adventures for those looking to explore beyond the European Alps.

For 2027, we are delighted to introduce the newest addition to our programme...

The Japanese Haute Route & Mount Fuji

This is a trek we have wanted to offer for some time. Japan is often associated with its fascinating culture, ancient temples and bustling cities, but many people are surprised to discover that it is also home to one of the most spectacular alpine mountain ranges anywhere in the world. Our new guided trek traverses the heart of the Northern Japanese Alps on an unforgettable hut-to-hut journey before finishing with the ascent of Japan's most iconic peak, the magnificent Mount Fuji. Combining breathtaking mountain scenery with Japanese hospitality, rich traditions and fascinating history, this promises to be one of the most unique adventures we have ever offered.

Why Japan?

Unlike many trekking destinations, Japan offers an extraordinary combination of genuine wilderness and remarkable efficiency. One day you're walking high above 3,000 metres on dramatic mountain ridges, the next you're travelling effortlessly by high-speed train, relaxing in a traditional onsen or exploring one of the country's most treasured historic sites.

The Northern Japanese Alps have a character all of their own. Unlike the European Alps, these mountains have never been shaped by glaciers, resulting in a rugged landscape of sharp ridges, volcanic peaks and rocky summits connected by spectacular high-level trails.

Our route links two of Japan's principal mountain regions, remaining above 2,000 metres for much of the journey. Over approximately 86 km (53 miles), we'll climb more than 7,500 metres (24,900 feet) while crossing some of Japan's most celebrated mountains.

Among the highlights is Mount Yarigatake, often referred to as "The Matterhorn of Japan", one of the country's famous 100 Great Mountains. Its distinctive spear-shaped summit is one of Japan's most recognisable alpine landmarks and provides an unforgettable objective during the traverse.

A fitting finale – Mount Fuji

No journey through Japan's mountains would feel complete without climbing Mount Fuji. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Fuji is one of the most recognisable mountains on Earth. Standing proudly at 3,776 metres, its perfectly symmetrical volcanic cone has become a symbol of Japan itself. Reaching the summit provides a memorable finale to an incredible week spent exploring the Japanese Alps.

More than just a trek

As with all our Worldwide Treks, this journey is about far more than simply covering the kilometres.

Along the way we'll experience authentic Japanese mountain culture, spending nights in traditional mountain refuges high amongst the peaks before descending to comfortable hotels in historic mountain towns.

We'll soak in natural hot springs, travel on Japan's world-famous rail network, and visit Matsumoto Castle, one of only a handful of original castles remaining in Japan and officially designated as a National Treasure.

Accommodation has been carefully chosen to provide a genuine Japanese experience, with a mixture of comfortable hotels, a traditional mountain auberge with hot spring facilities, and authentic mountain refuges.

The refuges are simpler than those found in the European Alps, with traditional tatami mat dormitories and futons, but they are all part of the experience and offer a fascinating glimpse into Japan's mountain heritage.

Guided by people who know Japan

This exciting new trek will be led by Tom, who has spent many years exploring the Japanese Alps. With his wife being Japanese, Tom has developed an excellent knowledge of both the mountains and the local culture, making him the ideal person to introduce our clients to this remarkable country.

Sara will also be joining the trip, ensuring guests enjoy the friendly atmosphere and personal service that have become synonymous with Mont Blanc Treks' guided holidays.

Together, Tom and Sara will combine local knowledge, mountain expertise and the supportive guiding style that our clients have come to know and appreciate.

Who is this trek for?

We have graded this trek as Grade 3 – Moderate to Challenging.

It is ideal for experienced hillwalkers and trekkers looking to discover one of the world's most fascinating mountain destinations.

If you've comfortably completed long-distance alpine treks such as the Tour du Mont Blanc, you'll likely find this an enjoyable next step. Those who have previously tackled the Walkers' Haute Route will also feel well prepared for the demands of the terrain.

The paths are rugged and rocky, with a handful of short sections protected by chains, metal steps and ladders. The only significant exposure is the optional final climb to the summit of Mount Yarigatake immediately above the refuge, allowing anyone who prefers not to complete this section to simply relax and enjoy the spectacular surroundings.

Whether you're joining Mont Blanc Treks for the first time or travelling with us again, you'll receive the same small-group experience, expert guiding and attention to detail that have become the hallmark of our trekking holidays.

Why late September?

We've chosen to run this trek in late September, when Japan's hot, humid summer has given way to cooler, drier autumn conditions, while the mountain huts and facilities remain open for the season. The weather is generally more stable, the air is clearer, and the first hints of autumn colour begin to appear across the mountains, making it one of the finest times of year to experience the Japanese Alps.

Join us in 2027

We're incredibly excited to introduce the Japanese Haute Route & Mount Fuji to the Mont Blanc Treks Worldwide Trek collection.

If you're looking for something genuinely different, an adventure that combines spectacular mountain trekking with one of the world's most fascinating cultures, we'd love you to join us.

From dramatic alpine ridges and traditional mountain refuges to ancient castles, natural hot springs and the unforgettable summit of Mount Fuji, this promises to be a journey you'll remember for years to come.

Japan awaits...
